My story is simple in summary, but complex in the day to day detail. This is me a month away from my 5th birthday. I am standing in front of my grandparent’s hardware store in Chattanooga, TN. They were major factors in my spiritual life, as well as my growing up years. My grandparents were Baptist and sent me to camp when I was 8 years old. I gave my life to Christ on hot summer night at the sound of “Just as I Am.” (The standard Baptist invitation song.) My parents did not go to church except Easter and Christmas, but there was a church behind our house. I would go to Vacation Bible School in the summers and play softball there. That was the extent of my Christian walk.
My high school years and college years, were typical; parties and late nights. I met my husband at work, soon celebrating 30 years…cheers, shouts of joys.., and after we had children we decided to go back to church.
I was working, taking care of my kids and my mom who was sick and living with us. I prayed, I went to church and believed, but it just wasn’t jiving for me.
My mom passed away at the age of 59. I had what is called a “Crisis of Belief.” I told God I would give Him 1 year to show me He was real. I would do my part, read my bible and pray. (That was all I knew to do.) And after 1 year, if I did not see that He was real, then I was done with the whole thing.
Well, let me tell you. That was 15 years ago and my life has been dramatically changed. Not only did I encounter God – the Father, Jesus Christ our Savior, and I met the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. WOW! The Holy Spirit, the connector to everything!!! Somehow, I missed Him all these years….
So that is my story… I hope we can enjoy the journey together in drawing close and getting to know the one true God.
